Theme
One of the themes of this story is to never give up. One piece of evidence that shows this is that Brian never gives up throughout the story. He feels that the search teams will find him and that he will be safe and no longer be alone in the woods. This is an example of Brian never giving up because he is always thinking about being saved and still lives for it. Another example of Brian never giving up is when he tries to make a fire and keeps on striking the stone until he finally gets the fire going a little. This is evidence that one of the themes of the story is to never give up because if Brian did not keep trying he would not have a fire so anything else could have happened if he did not have a fire. The last example is that Brian didn’t have a way to store fish and thought of a way to keep them fresh. “He spent an afternoon carrying rocks to the beach and making what amounted to a large pen for holding live fish”(Paulsen 128). This shows that Brian did not give up on what seemed impossible and made it possible. With these three examples of Brian never giving up it is obvious that one of the themes of the story is to never give up.
Another theme of the story is to expect the unexpected. Throughout the story Brian is faced with challenges and gets through them because he knew what to do and expected the unexpected. One example of this is when Brian is in the plane and the pilot has a heart attack and “So he left the plane running, holding altitude, and kept trying the radio” (Paulsen 22) this show that Brian planned a head and expected the unexpected. Another example where Brian expects the unexpected is where he sees the bear and just stands still instead of running away. This is an example because instead of running, Brian stands still so the bear doesn’t attack him because he probably knew that from the movies, television or someone and expected the bear to attack him but it didn’t because he knew what to do. One last example that shows the theme of the story is when Brian is on this adventure you see that it is really a story of a boy becoming a man. He has to learn how to fend for himself by finding food, warmth, shelter and protecting himself from animals in the wild. The story started out as a simple trip to visit his dad for the summer but ended up teaching him how to survive in the wild and how to deal with life head on.
